Float

Desert Code

Digital Animation. 1:57 minutes. 4:3. 2008

Float is a short animation made from photographs of a 12 by 8-foot painting created over a 2-day period at the South East Louisiana University Contemporary Art Gallery in Hammond, Louisiana. As it unfolds a human figure emerges from an abstract field of brush marks. After undergoing a traumatic experience suggestive of a medical intervention, it floats slowly to the top of the painting. With this work I was interested in both the possibility of a figure coming to life on a wall, as well as the contradiction of the figure appearing to float away only to be contained by the limits of the very wall on which it is painted. The sounds heard in Float were composed from the individual notes of a music box playing out of sequence.
