Tress and Ice
Digital Animation. 4:00 minutes. 2019
Trees and Ice is a frame-by-frame animation made from over a thousand photographs of a very ordinary Pennsylvania landscape taken during the winter. It attempts to capture some of the wonder and beauty, as well as the fragility, of these everyday features of the natural world which center so prominently in the climate crisis discourse. Photographed both up close and from far off we encounter them here in various states of decay and impermanence, evoking their tenuous relationship to a rapidly changing environment. The sounds heard are composed almost entirely from various recordings of bells of different types and sizes. Collaged together they create a kind of organic musicality that is at once melodious and dissonant, reminiscent both of spiritual calls to communion as well as alarming calls to action.
